Carlos Andradas, in his inauguration as rector of the UIMP

Carlos Andradas has taken office today as magnificent rector of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), at the headquarters of the Ministry of Universities on Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana. The ceremony was chaired by Manuel Castells, Minister of Universities and was attended by José Manuel Pingarrón, Secretary General of Universities and Marta Cruells, Chief of Cabinet of Minister Castells.

Andradas, professor of Mathematics and former rector of the Complutense University of Madrid, stated during the ceremony that Minister Castells was commissioned to “reinvent the UIMP and rediscover its role and its place in the 21st century without losing its identity.” The UIMP wants to be “the voice of academics, scientists, artists and thinkers. Ultimately, of society, to build from academic freedom, the thought that our society demands and needs,” he added.

In addition, he has insisted that “he hopes to live up to the expectations placed on me, in a position that carries a great responsibility for a singular university institution, whose most immense capital is its prestige.”

The new rector recalled the numerous personalities who have passed through the UIMP “such as Carlos Fuentes, Vargas Llosa, Margarita Salas, Jimmy Carter, Tapies, García de Enterría or many and many others who have passed through the Summer Courses of Santander, in a coexistence that has left an indelible mark on all of us “.

Andradas added that he is “fully aware of the challenge of not only maintaining, but raising, the prestige of an institution that started in 1932 and which therefore celebrates its 90th birthday next year, an event that we want to celebrate in style” .

In addition, the new rector has promised that “the UIMP will be at the service of society and the development of Spain, with rigor, quality, the search for knowledge and transparency.”

Finally, Andradas thanked “all the rectors who have preceded me in office, in particular the outgoing rector and her entire team, for their work done in extraordinarily difficult conditions during the pandemic.”

Manuel Castells
For his part, Manuel Castells, Minister of Universities, has highlighted “the importance of this university for being something unique, since it is an institution that is focused on the creation of ideas, proposals, as well as dialogue and intellectual interaction “. “Imagine if in the university we could remove the exams, the regulated courses, the bureaucratic meetings and remain only with the creation; because this exists and is called UIMP”, the minister has deepened.

Castells also highlighted the “autonomous nature of this institution”, since the Ministry of Universities “is only here to support it and the Board of Trustees to protect it and it is a great luck for us to have Carlos Andradas to govern this institution, in the that it is essential to invent “.

Castells added that he asks “a single thing from the new rector: to reinforce and consolidate the main headquarters of this university in the city of Santander and in extension, to reinforce the activities of the different headquarters, especially those found in depopulated Spain and Spain in crisis, such as the headquarters of La Línea de la Concepción “.
