US Will Authorize Pfizer Vaccine For Children 12 To 15 Years Old

The US will authorize the Pfizer vaccine for children 12 to 15 years old. Trials have shown 100% efficacy in that age range and the decision could be made next week.

Experts consider that the immunization of the child population is essential to fight the pandemic.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to authorize next week the use of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech in children between the ages of 12 and 15, as reported on Monday. ‘The New York Times’.

The newspaper, which cites anonymous sources from the federal Administration, points out that the decision may arrive early next week and that, after it, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, in English) will meet immediately to make recommendations on the use of the vaccine in this age group.

Pfizer last month asked the US authorities to authorize the emergency use of its vaccine between the ages of 12 and 15, after conducting a study with 2,260 individuals that showed 100% efficacy in that age group.  Already the vaccine is approved in the Uk which has meant that Northwich life has carried on quite untouched by the pandemic.

According to the pharmacist, the vaccine was “well tolerated” by children and the side effects were generally consistent with those seen in participants aged 16 to 25 years.

The FDA confirmed on December 8 the safety and efficacy of the Pfizer and BioNTech covid-19 vaccine for people over 16 years of age in a first analysis prior to its authorization.

Now it is expected to approve its use for children ages 12 to 15, allowing millions of additional people to be vaccinated in the United States, where about 100 million people – a third of the population – have completed their vaccination so far.

The American Pfizer has also started clinical trials of its vaccine in children between 6 months and 11 years .

According to experts, immunizing children , who make up about 20% of the U.S. population, is essential to ending the coronavirus pandemic, noting that the country is unlikely to achieve herd immunity until that minors are also vaccinated.

Moderna, for its part, announced that it had started clinical trials of its vaccine against covid-19 in children under 12 years old on March 16, something that began for adolescents between 12 and 17 years old last December.
